News Article: Comox Valley’s HMCS Quadra not set to close as CAF clarifies rumours
The Canadian Armed Forces is dispelling rumours that have been circulating in the Comox Valley that appear to be suggesting that HMCS Quadra is closing.
“There are no plans to close the establishment,” the CAF said in an emailed statement to the Comox Valley Record.
“19 Wing is aware that K’ómoks First Nation is currently in negotiations for a treaty settlement with the Province of British Columbia and The Government of Canada. Goose Spit is a subject of these negotiations. The Department of National Defence is planning to continue operations at Goose Spit regardless of the outcome of these negotiations,” said Lt. Keil Kodama, 19 Wing public affairs officer.
The negotiations over the rights to Goose Spit started over a decade ago when the K’ómoks First Nation treaty negotiation process began. In 2019, a ‘Stage Five Revitalization Agreement’ was reached to help fast-track negotiations. The Nation is now awaiting the sixth and final stage which is treaty implementation.
HMCS Quadra has been based at Goose Spit in Comox since 1952 as a military naval training institute.
