K’ómoks First Nation Marks Historic Milestone with Introduction of K’ómoks Treaty Act in B.C. Legislature

COMOX, B.C. — APRIL 14, 2026 — K’ómoks First Nation is celebrating a major milestone today as the Province of British Columbia introduces the K’ómoks Treaty Act, 2026 in the Legislature — a significant step toward final ratification of the K’ómoks Treaty.

This moment reflects more than 30 years of dedicated work by K’ómoks leadership, members, and partners to reach a modern treaty that recognizes K’ómoks’ inherent rights and lays the foundation for self-determination.

“Our members have spoken clearly in support of this treaty and our constitution,” said Chief Nicole Rempel, K’ómoks First Nation. “We are confident in the agreement and in the integrity of the process that has brought us to this point. Today marks an exciting step forward as we move closer to implementation and to realizing our vision for the future.”

On March 8, 2025, eligible voters of K’ómoks First Nation approved the K’ómoks Treaty with 81% voting in favour, alongside 83% approval of the K’ómoks Constitution — a strong mandate that continues to guide the Nation.

The K’ómoks Treaty will provide a clear and stable framework for governance, land management, and economic development. It represents a generational opportunity to strengthen K’ómoks governance, create sustainable economic growth, and support a healthy and prosperous future for K’ómoks people and the broader region.

“This is a moment to recognize how far we’ve come — and to look ahead to what’s possible,” added Chief Rempel. “We are ready for the work ahead and committed to moving forward in a way that reflects respect, collaboration, and shared success.”

The K’ómoks Treaty Act will now be debated in the B.C. Legislature. If passed, it will represent a key step toward provincial ratification, followed by treaty signing and federal legislation before the treaty comes into effect.
