Introducing the K’ómoks Elder Treaty Distribution Process

We are pleased to share that we have finalized the Elders Treaty Distribution policy and claims process, which includes distribution eligibility, procedures, claim form, and payment methods.

The Elders Treaty Distribution is a one-time payment to eligible K’ómoks members. The distribution is being implemented as a result of our successful Treaty ratification. The purpose of the distribution is to ensure Elders share in the benefit of the K’ómoks Treaty. While the amount of this one-time payment was originally set at $10,000 CAD, we have now increased the payment amount to $15,000 CAD.

Any K’ómoks member aged 60+ years who is enrolled under Treaty is eligible to claim this benefit. This does not include anyone who is conditionally enrolled prior to the Treaty Effective Date. Every eligible member will be able to access this one-time treaty benefit once they turn 60 years old. If an Elder passes before claiming the benefit, their estate may request it.

The Elders Treaty Distribution Policy and Procedures can be found at www.komoks.ca/policies. The document provides an overview of the one-time financial distribution process and eligibility. Its creation was guided by respect for Elders and K’ómoks First Nation values.

Distribution claim form and payment method:

As an eligible Elder claiming the payment, you must complete the Elders Distribution Claim Form, which includes personal information such as your name, status number (if applicable), date of birth, contact information, and payment processing information. Do I need to submit a claim for this payment?

Yes. You must complete and submit the KFN Elders Treaty Distribution Claim Form, available in-person at the KFN Admin Reception or online at www.komoks.ca/eldertreatypayment. You may also request to have a printed claim form mailed to you.

What if I don’t submit my claim form?

Elder Distribution payments will not be processed without a completed claim form and any required documents are received.

When will I receive my payment?

Eligible members 60+ can complete the claim form. Once the Eligibility and Enrolment Coordinator verifies your form, the KFN Finance team will process your claim for payment. Please allow up to two weeks for processing.

Can the payment be made by direct deposit?

Yes. You will need to provide either 1) a void cheque, or 2) an authorized bank-generated direct deposit form. Handwritten banking information will not be accepted.

Will receiving the distribution impact my eligibility for Income Assistance, Old Age Pension, or Disability?

No. The Elders Treaty Distribution is considered a gift, so it does not affect receiving other benefits (including OAS, GST credits, childcare benefits, etc.).

No. You cannot apply for the benefit before you turn 60. We cannot process applications until the day of an eligible Elder’s 60th birthday.

Do Elders collect any interest on the Elder Distribution benefit?

No interest is paid on the benefit. The Elder Distribution benefit is a one-time $15,000 payment. This amount will be fixed for 5 years and may be adjusted according to British Columbia’s Consumer Price Index at the end of the term. Anyone who has received a payment is not entitled to future inflationary adjustments.
